This Mortal Coil

This Mortal Coil

Inspired by Bernini, Cornell, Duchamp, and Klee, it also reconnects to the wood-carved sculptures I’ve done in the past. “Coil” is a 16th-century term that can mean anything from “turmoil” to “to lie in rings or spirals.” It was most famously used in Hamlet’s “To be, or not to be” speech—“When we have shuffled off this mortal coil”.

A small articulated figure attached at their groin rotates 360 degrees in one hour. The movement is very subtle, and might not be noticed by a casual viewer in real time. I like the figure’s imperceptible movement. I think it is analogous to how we age, especially as adults—how ever-so-slowly our physicality diminishes, our hair thins and whitens, our skin wrinkles and sags—changes only realized by looking at an old photo or a cellphone closeup.

I had a thought

I had a thought

“I had a thought” is a wood sculpture of a rib cage with a heart made with pieces of broken red glass at its center that illuminate with lights. The piece started as a random thought on a kayak on the ocean, but as its complexities developed to its final form, it connected to things happening to my life.
